Tithes and Offerings

I remember going to church and dreading "the offering" time.  I always felt compelled to give something, and then I was usually embarrassed by my feeble donation.  I never really understood where the money was going, and to be honest, news stories of church scandals left me reluctant to give anything.

My pastor gave a sermon about giving, but it was done in an interesting way.  He started talking about a loved one that needed help just building a house.  He painted a picture about how the person could have built the house himself.  You see he didn't need the help, he was a carpenter by trade, so the project was doable.  But nonetheless, he invited people to help him: people whose houses he had built before.  Every single person responded with excitement to help the builder who had given them such a nice house.  Some had a lot of experience with different aspects of building, others none, but they all came because they had a relationship with the builder.  Nothing gave them greater joy than to give back the time and talents they did have as a way of expressing thanks for the love he had shown them by building their own homes.

The pastor concluded by then flipping the story, and it caught me by surprise you might say.  He talked about how the Lord has blessed us with relationship.  He has met us in our life journey and extended some form of grace and mercy to us.  He is the provider of our homes and all things we need in life.  Though He is the giver of life and all good things around us, He has also invited us to help build His house...the Kingdom of God.  Lord knows He doesn't need us, but He has asked.  He has asked to help us reach other people so that He may dwell in their hearts.  And so we should respond joyfully, out of the gifts He has given.  None of the people came to help the builder to impress him or earn his friendship.  They came because they had already a powerful relationship with Him.  The Lord does not ask us to give to earn His love or show our calculated obedience.  He wants our hearts to be filled with joy, and to give out of the abundance of that joy, for the benefit of others and the glory of His name.

"But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.  So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver." 2 Cor 9:6-7
